Abstract:

Baliospermum solanifolium (Burm.) Suresh is an important medicinal plant in the Euphorbiaceae family but the correlation between its phenolic content and antioxidant activity has not been closely investigated. Its stems and leaves were extracted according to polarity of hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the dried extracts of stems and leaves were investigated. The results revealed the presence of bioactive substances such as terpenoids, saponins, tannins and alkaloids in both stem and leaf extracts. The total phenolic content was determined by the Folin-Ciocaltue method. The results showed that methanolic extracts of stems and leaves exhibited the highest total phenolic content values of 587 ± 31 and 620 ± 55 μg GAE/g crude extract, respectively. This corresponds to the presence of tannin in this plant. Our analysis of the antioxidant activity was carried out using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhdrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2/-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid diammonium salts) (ABTS) methods. Good antioxidant activity was found in methanolic crude extracts from both stems and leaves with respective IC50 values of 64 ppm and 70 ppm. Antioxidant capacityby DPPH and ABTS assays of the extracts was correlated with phenolic contents; r =0.700 and 0.774, respectively. For B. solanifolium, further experiments including the purification and characterization are required or indentify of the certain bioactive compounds of phenolic substances presented in polar extractants such as methanol.
