Most wild and cultivated bananas containing Musa balbisiana Colla genome (designated as BB, BBB, ABB, and AAB) were found to be endogenized by badnavirus, which is believed to co-evolve with their host plants. To assess diversity and evolutionary history of the bananas, we reconstructed phylogenetic relationship among 91 endogenous pararetroviral sequences using ribonuclease H (RNase H) domain of reverse transcriptase (RT) and based on maximum parsimony analyses. The results revealed 21 clusters in two clades. Most members in one clade were native to Thailand, while the others were from elsewhere. Based on these endogenous viral sequences, the origins of the hosts were still ambiguous and possible reasons are discussed.
