Abstract:

Garcinia cowa Roxb. is an edible plant of the family Clusiaceae. Several extracts and compounds from Garcinia species have been shown to improve lipid profi le and be effective inthe treatment of obesity. However, there has been no report on the effect of G.cowa extracts on the fat-digesting enzyme pancreatic lipase. Pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity of 10 extracts from different parts of this plant was evaluated. Inhibition of porcine pancreatic lipase activity by these extracts was determined using p-nitrophenyl palmitate (PNP) as the substrate and orlistat as the positive control. n-Hexane extract of the G. cowa latex displayed the most potent inhibitory activity (99.7 ± 3.9% inhibition), followed by the ethyl acetate(88.4 ± 8.3%) and n-butanol extracts of the latex (80.3 ± 10.1%),respectively. Ethanolic extract of the root bark displayed moderate activity (74.2 ± 2.3%). These results suggest that the chemical constituents of G. cowa latex and root bark should be further investigated for the active components responsible for the anti-lipase activity.
